A Quick Note on Why This Even Matters

You might be wondering, does it really make a difference what I eat around my work out? Honestly, yes, it can! When you fuel up well before training, you tend to have more energy and push a little harder. And when you eat the right things afterward, your body recovers faster and holds onto muscle while letting go of fat.

It doesn't have to be perfect. Even small improvements to your eating habits around workouts can add up over time. So, let's keep it chill and just look at a few things that could help.

Tips for Eating Before Your Workout

The goal before a workout is pretty simple: give yourself enough energy to train without feeling heavy or bloated. You don't need a huge meal, just something light and easy that your body can actually use.

A few tips to try:

  • Try to eat about 60–90 minutes before you work out if you can, this gives your body time to digest without feeling sluggish
  • Go for something with carbs and a little protein, this combo gives you energy and helps protect your muscles during the session
  • Keep it light on fat and fibre right before training these, take longer to digest and can make you feel uncomfortable mid-workout
  • If you're short on time, even just a banana 20–30 minutes before is totally fine!

Some easy pre-workout snack ideas:
• Banana with a little almond butter
• A small bowl of oats with berries
• Greek yogurt with sliced fruit
• Whole grain toast with a boiled egg
• A light smoothie with fruit, spinach, and some protein

Tips for Eating After Your Workout

After a workout, your body is basically in recovery mode, it's ready to absorb nutrients and start repairing your muscles. This is actually a really good window to eat something nourishing, and it doesn't have to be complicated at all.

Here's what tends to work well:

  • Eat within 30–60 minutes of finishing if you can this is when your muscles are most ready to receive nutrients
  • Prioritize protein — it helps your muscles recover and keeps you feeling full. Around 20–40g is a good target. Think chicken, eggs, fish, or a protein shake.
  • Add some carbs too — your body uses up energy during exercise, so a bit of rice, sweet potato, or fruit helps top those stores back up
  • Load up on veggies — they're packed with nutrients, low in calories, and help your body recover. Win-win!

Easy post-workout meal ideas:
• Chicken with rice and steamed veggies
• Scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast with avocado
• Cottage cheese with fruit and a drizzle of honey
• Tuna with wholegrain crackers and cucumber
• A protein smoothie with banana, spinach, and Greek yogurt

Don't Forget to Stay Hydrated!

This one's so easy to overlook, but hydration genuinely plays a big role in how well you perform and how efficiently your body burns fat. Even mild dehydration can make workouts feel way harder than they need to be.

  • Drink water before, during, and after your session
  • For most people, plain water is all you need — skip the sugary sports drinks unless you're training for over an hour
  • Aim for at least 2 litres of water a day, and a bit more on days you work out

Having a good water bottle you actually like using makes a surprisingly big difference to how much you drink throughout the day. Little things add up!

 Quick Recap

Before your workout:

Light carbs + a little protein, about 60–90 mins before. Banana, oats, yogurt with fruit — keep it simple and easy to digest.

During:

Sip water throughout. That's really all you need for most workouts!

 After your workout:

Protein + carbs + veggies within 30–60 mins. Chicken and rice, eggs on toast, or a protein smoothie all work great.

You're Doing Great... Keep It Up!

Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect. Just a few small tweaks to how you eat around your workouts can really add up over time. Be kind to yourself, stay consistent, and enjoy the journey. You've got this!
